New Zealand First was formed in 1993 to represent those New Zealanders concerned about the social and economic direction of our country, and who were seeking pragmatic, commonsense representation in Parliament.

The Party was founded on "Fifteen Fundamental Principles" that emphasise accountable and transparent government, commonsense social and economic policy, and placing the interests of our country and its people at the forefront of Government decision making.

Today, New Zealand First is a party that focusses on pragmatism and common sense in the wake of extreme political ideological and bureaucratic capture of successive governments.  As a grassroots movement, New Zealand First is committed to representing forgotten New Zealanders and advocating for support by connecting with the various communities across the country.

Shane entered politics as a list member for Labour in 2005 – 2014 he was first elected on 6^th October 2002 and also served as a List MP for New Zealand First in 2017. He was a member of the 48^th, 49^th 50^th & 52^nd Parliament.

While in Parliament Shane held numerous roles including Minister for Regional Economic Development, Building & Construction, Forestry, and Infrastructure, to name a few. He also served as a member & chairperson of several select Committee’s including Finance and Expenditure, Primary Production, Maori Affairs and Commerce.

As Regional Economic Development Minister, Shane oversaw the Provincial Growth Fund, which was responsible for $3 Billion investment in regional New Zealand. Shane was also the chairperson of Sealords and was the first High Commissioner to the Pacific Islands.
