Martin Gummer

Martin Gummer brings extensive experience across large and small business, the public sector, and energy, transport infrastructure, manufacturing and exporting.

Born in the King Country, Martin Gummer is a fifth-generation New Zealander and the son of two pioneering Kiwi aviators.

After graduating from the University of Auckland with degrees in law and economics, Martin qualified as a barrister and solicitor. During his university years he became Chairman of the Young Nationals for three years and then stood as a National Party candidate for Waitakere.

Following 11 years in various roles within New Zealand’s then largest company, Fletcher Challenge, Martin was appointed to three successive inaugural chief executive roles in both the public and local government sectors, giving him deep experience and insights into New Zealand’s energy and land transport sectors.

Martin’s achievements include establishing a range of innovative energy efficiency programmes at EECA (the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority), leading a review into the causes of cost overruns in major roading projects, and laying the foundations for achieving regional consensus on electrification of passenger rail in Auckland.

Over the last 10 years Martin has worked in sustainable energy, including the last five as Managing Director of a jointly owned energy management company. He has also done terms on the former Auckland Electric Power Board and the Auckland Conservation Board.

More recently, Martin has been proactive in raising awareness of and recommending solutions for the serious problems facing industrial users of natural gas, and formed strong views about the need for bold solutions to New Zealand’s energy challenges. These values led him stand for New Zealand First, where he will represent the Party in Epsom in 2026.
